Stand Up and Speak Out

In 2001, Dalit leaders called on people around the world to speak out on behalf of India’s Dalits. Here in the UK, Dalit Freedom Network is calling on all people of goodwill to stand up for one of the world’s poorest and most oppressed people groups, and to speak out against the injustices they face day to day, particularly through trafficking and slavery. Become a Dalit Freedom Champion.

[raising awareness]

You can play your part in telling your family, friends, neighbours and colleagues about the scale and the scope of trafficking in India. This will help us to get the message out to the British public so that they can join us in making a stand for justice and freedom.  The more people that know, and the more they know, the more likely they are to speak out and take action.

DFN will provide you with ideas and resources to help spread the message. Look at our Dalit Freedom Action Pack for starters. This includes background information, facts and figures, along with how-to-guides for a variety of activities designed to grab attention. As well as pointing people to this website, you can also use DFN leaflets and posters to provide more information for your friends. Order these and other resources on our Resources Order Form. We are creating a network of individuals and groups to share great ideas for how to get the message out. We aim to unleash the creativity of our Dalit Freedom Champions and Action Groups.

[lobbying your MP]

We need politicians and other people of influence to take up the cause of Dalit freedom. They can connect with key people in India to give encouragement and help to take positive steps which can lead to better anti-trafficking legislation, more effective enforcement, higher standards of care and protection for the victims of trafficking, as well as initiatives to transform communities and change attitudes so that trafficking and slavery become totally unacceptable.

MPs take notice of their constituents. The more people who raise the issue of Dalit trafficking with their MPs, the more likely they are to not only take notice, but to also take action. You can be one of those catalysts for change as a Dalit Freedom Champion. For more information, take a look at our Dalit Freedom Action Pack (also available for purchase) and our Action Sheets.

[campaigns]

DFN provides helpful guidelines and tips for how to contact your MP and raise the issue. We will also keep you in touch with the latest campaigns on particular issues of aspects of Dalit trafficking to give you specific actions that you can ask your MP to take.
