‘Intimate dist admin on bonded labour cases’
Deputy commissioner Dr N V Prasad has directed the revenue and labour department to inform the district administration if they come across any cases of bonded labour in the district.
Speaking at a review meeting recently, he said it is not right to forcibly make an individual work without paying him decent salary. Many a times, bonded labour system does not come to light.
The revenue and labour departments should join hands with each other to ward off social evils like bonded labour system, low wages and child labour system.
Five jailed in Ranchi trafficking case
Five people, accused of selling and buying a teenaged girl three years ago, were Wednesday sentenced to 10 to five years in jail by a local court here.
The case is about the trafficking of the 17-year-old from Ranchi to Haryana, said B.N. Mishra, a lawyer.
13 child labourers rescued in Surat
Local labour department officials rescued 13 child labourers from three different zardosi units at Katargam in Surat during a raid on Wednesday.
All the rescued children are below the age of 12 and belong to different villages in Purnea district of Bihar, officials said.
Surat's assistant labour commissioner M S Patel said, “We have received information that a well organised child trafficking network is active in the area. They bring minors to Surat from different districts in Bihar. The mediators, who have links in Surat as well as in Bihar, get Rs 5,000 per child from the unit owners in Surat and pay Rs 2,000 each to the family members of a child."
Special panels to check bonded labour
Special vigilance committees have been constituted under the aegis of Revenue Divisional Officers in the district to ensure abolition of bonded labour.
Announcing this at a review meeting here on Wednesday, district Collector Neetu Prasad said the RDOs could register cases suo motu whenever they had information about the practice of bonded labour.
India: Jesuit school saves girls from temple prostitution
The girls are often brought to the school here by concerned neighbours who request for admission on their behalf. The devadasi girls stay in the Hostel here during the school year which removes them from the toxic environment of prostitution at home. Interestingly the Jesuits claim that they are among the higher achieving students. When we discussed why this was – whether they are more intelligent or more motivated – the consensus was that they had a burning desire to escape the life that they have seen their mothers having. The Jesuits and staff treat these girls with great sensitivity, their identity as devedasi is not known by most of the teachers and other students. This anonymity is ensured at parents meetings or evenings as the Jesuits ask for only one parent to come for all the families.
Government approves relief plan for rape victims
Delhi government on Monday approved a comprehensive compensation scheme for victims of rape, acid attacks, human trafficking, child abuse and kidnapping. It has decided to set aside Rs 15 crore, to begin with, for the scheme that was formulated by the Union home ministry.
Trafficking ring busted, 11 children rescued
Haryana police claimed to have busted an inter-state child trafficking racket and rescued 11 children, including six girls, from the clutches of a gang.
The police arrested two persons and produced them before a court, which has remanded them in police custody for four days. The
rescued children are from Jharkhand and Orissa, the police said.

Devadasi system: panel for strict enforcement of Act
V. Raghunadha Rao, Chairman of the one-man commission constituted for the protection and welfare of Devadasis, Mathangi, and Joginis, said the Andhra Pradesh Prohibition of Dedication of Devadasis Act, 1988, should be implemented strictly to ensure that atrocities committed on hapless girls and women in the name of religion did not ruin more lives.
Addressing a review meeting on the subject here on Friday, Mr. Raghunadha Rao said Devadasi and other similar systems still exist in the country, specifically in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Odisha.
Crusader against trafficking gets 'Man of the Year Award'
The menace of human trafficking remains a major problem in India despite many policies and laws being in place, said Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan at an award event here.
The chief minister said that India has been on watch list of international organisations as its efforts have not been adequate to eradicate this social evil.
Chavan was speaking Friday night after presenting The Week magazine's "Man of The Year Award" for 2011 to Ajeet Singh, who has been spearheading a campaign against human trafficking and has been working for rehabilitation of trafficked women and their children.
