16 year old girl rescued from traffickers

A DFN UK associate led a team which rescued a 16 year old girl from human traffickers in Delhi, last month.

The girl and her elder sister were sold to a domestic service agency in Delhi in December 2009. After months of physical and sexual abuse both at the hands of the agency owner and a family member at the house she was sent to work in, the girl was rescued by a team including lawyer Lansinglu Rongmei, who is a consultant to DFN UK in India and the local police.

Despite bearing scars of her mistreatment and undertaking a full medical examination, the police, who were initially helpful, have, until now, failed to register a complaint or take any action.

Anti Trafficking Legal Strategy

This story, while happily recording the rescue of a young girl trafficked into abusive domestic service, also demonstrates the huge amount of work that still needs to be done to enforce the legal framework needed to protect victims and prosecute perpetrators. DFN UK, through individuals like Lansinglu, is working on the ground in India to implement a legal strategy which does exactly that.

In addition to working with other Human Rights organisations to campaign for laws that properly protect potential trafficking victims, DFN UK is providing legal expertise and support to assist local law enforcement agencies with the investigation and prosecution of trafficking cases. In 2011, DFN UK also hopes to provide intensive training workshops in India sharing and exploring best practices for the investigation and prosecution of trafficking cases.

Lansinglu is well-known to DFN UK having consulted for one of their partner organisations in India for some time. She is a passionate and exceptional lawyer when it comes to seeking justice for the victims of persecution and human rights abuses.
